I've been in freezing rain in Portland before. Some jackasses always think that in spite of the fact that they can push their car sideways away from the curb, they should be driving.
Bill mentioned the Arduino on the SolderSmoke blog, and I remembered that I had one floating around unused. A few minutes later, I had coded up a simple Morse beacon sender, and soldered a cable together to send Morse via my trust FT-817nd.
After six and a half weeks of Basic Military Training, this was the first glimpse we had of Adam. Check him out around 1:38, directly looking at the camera.
Here's the unedited and unretouched footage that I got from the camera. The sound is pretty weak because this camera wasn't miked. The other camera should be better.
I was testing out a simple optimization for generating Mandelbrot a bit quicker than my simplest program. It turns out to be almost twice as fast. This video was converted to an AVI file encoded with the lossless HUFFYUV encoder, and then uploaded to YouTube.
I had a motion sensing digital camera trained on my front door. This afternoon, it tripped and mailed me the following video. My wife says that there are (or at least were) real berries on the wreath, perhaps that explains the bird's interest.
My wife noticed a family of quail (mom, dad, and lots of babies) on our fence. The babies were small, and lingered in the grass at the bottom where they were basically impossible to photograph, but mom and dad stayed on the lookout at the top. Neat!
